Covid-19 Silver Linings: Small Businesses Getting Creative

They say that even the darkest clouds have a silver lining and despite the doom and gloom and general anxiety around Covid-19, there's definitely still things to smile about.

One group that have really stepped up to the plate and impressed me are the young, dynamic and creative small businesses that have found ways to innovate and switch their business models around in order to suit the new world. Not only are they keeping their businesses alive, preserving jobs and bringing a smile to their customers' face but in many cases's these startups are giving back too.

As a business owner myself, I know how challenging it is right now for everyone to just survive but this show of enthusiasm and creativity gives me so much hope for the future. To shed some light on these superstars I've compiled a list of some of my favourites here:

1. Network Coffee

Pre-Covid: Top class cafe on Aungier Street in Dublin

Post-Covid: Monthly coffee subscription service personalised according to your favourite brew

One of the slickest coffee shops in Dublin? Probably. A cult like legion of customer? Most definitely. The guys at Network are known for trying they hand at cool stuff and their Covid solution is no exception. They created an online quiz to understand your preferences and then curate a special bundle so that you an recreate your favourite Network coffee drinks at home. Class Act.

Bonus innovation from these guys: a Network Brunch Box - all the ingredients to make your favourite Network dishes at home. They provide a step by step guide and deliver them to your door every Saturday morning. Heavenly?

2. Mad Yolks X Fourth Corner

Pre-Covid: Egg based hole in the wall restaurant and bar respectively

Post-Covid: Delivery and Collection of Cocktails and food. Quarantini Time!

The boys at Mad Yolks had just opened in their newest location at Fourth Corner in Dublin 8 when Covid-19 forced them to close. Last week they announced their solution - tasty AF grub and pre mixed cocktails delivered to your door. You can pre-order for next day delivery here

3. Wholey Moly X Tea Rex

Pre-Covid: Only the best cookies around and some mighty fine tea infusions

Post-Covid: Sending IOU hugs

I love this idea because I'm a huge hugger and, living alone, I really miss hugging every single person I come in contact with. Luckily the good guys at Wholey Moly and Tea Rex have come up with the next best thing - an IOU hug in the form of a cup of infused tea and a cookie with a personal message to the receiver for just GBP 3. How cool is that? What's even better is that all profits are going to Trussel Trust, a food bank charity focused on eradicating hunger which has been hit hard as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. So much to love about the one!

4. Flying Elephant Productions

Pre-Covid: The events productions people. You name the event and they probably built everything you see.

Post-Covid: The original Work-From-Home desk

With the events industry totally on pause, these guys got creative and executed fast. They saw how we were all getting to grips with WFH and struggling with sharing the kitchen table and/or alternating with working at a laptop from the sofa so they quickly designed a flat pack work-from-home desk that honestly looks better than any piece of furniture I've ever bought. I picked up the standing WFH desk - bought it at 10pm on a Wednesday evening and it arrived at lunch time on Thursday. The best bit, it took me 26 seconds to assemble! I'll never sit down again, I promise you!

How Donations Work

Life is a little overwhelming right now. You feel it. We feel it. Everyone feels it. But perhaps no one feels it more so than our friends and family working overtime as healthcare professionals on the front line. We know many of  you want to express your gratitude for the hard work being carried out in hospitals across the country so we decided to create a way for you to donate a case of fiid to a hospital of your choice.

How does it work?

  1. Click the donate box at the bottom of your order to add to cart
  2. Write the name of the hospital to which you’d like us to send
  3. Complete the order by following the payment steps
  4. We’ll send the meals by courier to your hospital along with a note of encouragement to let them know how much we appreciate them
